Om museet
During the construction of the Vienna Stadtbahn, its architect Otto Wagner suggested building a dedicated stop for Emperor Franz Joseph I near Schönbrunn Palace. The small pavilion at Hietzing station was completed in the late 1890s and was given a particularly representative design inside and out, tailored entirely to the emperor.
The centrepiece is the octagonal waiting room with mahogany panelling and embroidered wall hangings with philodendron motifs. A large-format painting by Carl Moll shows Vienna with its Stadtbahn network from a bird's-eye view. The emperor used the pavilion only twice – for Wagner, what mattered most was that the imperial splendour brought modern architecture esteem in Vienna.
After the end of the monarchy, the building served, among other things, as a studio and as an exhibition space of the Austrian Museum of Social and Economic Affairs. From the mid-1980s it was renovated in keeping with its listed status and was taken over by the Wien Museum in 1989. After damage, the pavilion had to be closed in 2010; following extensive restoration it has been accessible again since 2014 as a branch of the Wien Museum. The exhibition comprises three rooms on the ground floor.
