Om museet

The house was built from 1590 as the widow's residence of the Puchhaim family, as an open U shape with arcades facing the castle. In 1658 the foundation stone of the Piarist church was laid; subsequently the building developed into the Piarist college with a grammar school, which remained in the house until 1961. In 1983 the Piarist order returned the monastery administration.

Between 1986 and 1988 the complex was revitalised according to plans by Carl Pruscha, the arcades walled up in 1657 were reopened, and the opening followed on 11 June 1988. In 2008 the house was converted for the Lower Austrian State Exhibition 2009.

Today the Kunsthaus is an event, seminar and cultural centre with concerts, festivals and conferences. The Kunstverein Horn shows several exhibitions of contemporary art here each year, with a focus on paper, printmaking and bibliophile art. The Galerie Thurnhof has been in the house since 1989, and since 1992 the BuchKunstBiennale has taken place every two years together with the Edition Thurnhof.
