Om museet
The Gusen concentration camp was established from December 1939 as a subcamp of the Mauthausen concentration camp, about four kilometres from the main camp. Prisoners were registered here from May 1940; by the liberation in May 1945, a total of around 71,000 people from nearly 30 countries had been imprisoned, more than half of whom lost their lives. They were forced to work in granite quarries and later for the armaments industry, including in underground tunnel complexes.
After the end of the war the camp was quickly dismantled, and large parts of the site are now built over with residential housing. In the 1960s, survivors' associations erected, at their own expense, a monument around the preserved crematorium oven; the Memorial de Gusen was inaugurated in 1965. Since 1997 the Republic of Austria has been responsible for the site, which is organisationally part of the Mauthausen Memorial.
In 2004 a visitor centre opened next to the memorial with the exhibition "Gusen Concentration Camp 1939–1945. Traces – Fragments – Reconstructions". Its core is the uncovered foundations of the crematorium barracks; further sections deal with the layout of the camp, forced labour, mass killings, prisoner society with exemplary biographies, and the liberation, complemented by a film with eyewitness interviews. Since 2007 the Gusen audio trail, an art project with voices of survivors, local residents and perpetrators, has led through today's residential neighbourhood.
In 2022 the Republic acquired further parts of the historic site, including the roll-call square, SS barracks and stone crusher. They are currently being incorporated step by step into a newly designed memorial and are accessible on guided tours.
