Om museet

The Militärluftfahrtmuseum in Zeltweg was created in 2005 as an exhibition marking the 50th anniversary of the Austrian Bundesheer. It is housed in Hangar 8 at the Hinterstoisser air base. Since 2012 it has been a permanent branch of the Heeresgeschichtliches Museum in Vienna and is thus part of the state military museums.

Across roughly 5,000 square meters, the museum shows the history of Austrian military aviation, above all the air forces of the Second Republic since 1945. More than 25 historic aircraft are on display, including the Yakovlev Yak-18, the Saab J-29F "Flying Barrel" (Fliegende Tonne), the de Havilland Vampire and the Saab 35OE Draken.

The aircraft are complemented by aircraft engines, radar equipment, anti-aircraft guns, uniforms and historic vehicles, as well as other equipment for airspace surveillance. The museum is located on the grounds of an active military airfield; access is through the entrance gate, from which it is about 400 meters to the hangar.

Admission is also free for participants in courses, members of the Verein der Freunde des HGM (Friends of the HGM association), of the Museumsbund or ICOM, war-disabled persons, soldiers in uniform and BMLV staff with service ID, as well as members of the Gesellschaft zur Förderung der Österreichischen Luftstreitkräfte (society for the promotion of the Austrian air forces).
