Om museet

The museum goes back to the physician and collector Heinz R. Böhme, who, as a child of Jewish descent, narrowly escaped deportation. From his collection of around 700 works, a public museum emerged in Salzburg in 2017, run by a non-profit foundation.

Under the term "Lost Generation", the museum brings together artists born around the turn of the century whose work was shaped by persecution, condemnation as "degenerate", exile or suppression. The focus is on oil paintings from the years 1920 to 1945, complemented by drawings, prints and sculptures; more than 80 donations have expanded the holdings.

The museum is housed on the first floor of the Steinhauserhaus, a building erected around 1300 in which Maria Anna Mozart also lived for a time. Around 70 works hang on roughly 300 square metres in rooms reminiscent of an early 20th-century apartment; striking features are the red Adnet marble and the marble columns in the atrium.

The programme includes, besides the collection display, thematic exhibitions, guided tours and a collection catalogue presenting the artists' biographies.
