Om museet

The museum's roots go back to the mid-18th century, when Emperor Francis I Stephen of Lorraine acquired the then largest natural history collection from Johann Ritter von Baillou. The imperial natural history cabinets gave rise in 1876 to the Imperial and Royal Natural History Court Museum.

The building was constructed from 1871 to 1889 to plans by Gottfried Semper and Carl von Hasenauer as a twin of the Kunsthistorisches Museum on Maria-Theresien-Platz. It opened to the public on 10 August 1889. The octagonal dome is around 33 metres high and crowned by a statue of Helios; the permanent collection is spread over 39 halls.

The collections comprise around 30 million objects. On display in the permanent collection are, among other things, the roughly 29,500-year-old Venus of Willendorf, the world's largest publicly displayed meteorite collection, a bouquet of gemstones made of over 2,100 diamonds, and skeletons and models of dinosaurs. The museum is also one of Austria's major non-university research institutions; it also includes the Pathological-Anatomical Collection in the Narrenturm.
