Om museet

The museum has existed since 1991 in a former stable building in Winklern above Lake Ossiach and is considered the only mushroom museum in Austria. Founder Karl-Heinz Zindler made lifelike models out of cement and other materials over many years; today the house shows around 1,500 handmade mushroom exhibits of about 250 species.

The exhibition follows the four seasons and places the mushrooms in their habitat among plants and animals. Anyone who wants to know more about a model can call up information on the species, the risk of confusion and toxicity via QR codes. Further stations include games for identifying edible and poisonous mushrooms, a crystal room with light and sound presentations, a forest at night with glowing mushrooms and lichens, and a look back at the history of the forests.

Since May 2025, the Elli Riehl doll world has also been part of the house: hundreds of cloth dolls show scenes of rural life and folk customs from about fifty years ago. The museum is run by the Tourismusverband Gerlitzen Alpe – Ossiacher See (tourism association); it is part of the Kärnten Card and the ErlebnisCARD.

The house describes itself as a family-friendly destination, also suitable in bad weather. There is a craft and painting corner for children, as well as interactive games for identifying mushrooms.
