Om museet

The villa in Gloggnitz was built in 1894 and purchased by Karl Renner in 1910. He moved his residence here after being elected to the Imperial Council in 1907 in the Neunkirchen constituency. The house remained his private property until 1950; later his grandchildren, who lived in America, sold it. The architect Hubert Gessner extended the upper floor, and today the villa is a listed building.

In 1978 the association "Dr. Karl Renner Gedenkstätte", founded at the suggestion of Chancellor Bruno Kreisky, acquired the house and set it up as a museum. The then academic director Siegfried Nasko and the artist Gotthard Fellerer redesigned the former residence and in 1999 curated two permanent exhibitions, on Renner's path from farmer's son to Federal President and on Austria's path from a multi-ethnic state to the European Union.

Between 2017 and 2019 both exhibitions were fundamentally renewed. Using numerous originals from politics and everyday life, they trace the upheavals of Austrian history in the 20th century. In the basement of the villa and in the service building, annually changing exhibitions on current topics take place; for people with limited mobility there is a virtual tour of the house.
