Om museet

The castle in Dürnkrut dates from the Renaissance. In the 17th century the field commander Rudolf von Teuffenbach had an early Baroque castle chapel added. In the 18th century the Sala Terrena was created, a garden hall whose vault shows an exotic landscape with palm trees and birds and which is attributed to Count Jakob von Hamilton, who came from Scotland.

The place is historically significant as the site of the Battle on the Marchfeld of 1278 between Rudolf of Habsburg and Ottokar II of Bohemia. In the castle, dioramas and weapons commemorate this event, which together with nearby Jedenspeigen is known as the Battle of Dürnkrut and Jedenspeigen.

In 1985 the market municipality of Dürnkrut acquired the building. Today it houses municipal offices, the registry office and two large event halls. There is also a small castle museum showing stone tools and finds from Austria's prehistoric era; one room is also devoted to burial customs in the eastern Weinviertel. The museum, chapel and Sala Terrena can be visited on a guided tour after registration.
