Om museet
The castle stands on a rocky spur on the north shore of Lake Goldegg. After the dispute over the throne between Louis the Bavarian and Frederick the Fair, the Lords of Goldegg were allowed to build a new castle from 1323, the core of which has survived to this day. After the family died out in 1400, the property changed hands several times and eventually passed to the Archbishops of Salzburg, who had it administered by stewards.
In 1527 Count Christoph von Schernberg received the castle and converted it into a comfortable Renaissance residence with an enclosed inner courtyard. Its showpiece is the Knights’ Hall, commissioned in 1536: its coffered ceiling shows, in over a hundred panels, the coats of arms of the Salzburg bishoprics, the cathedral chapter and the nobility of the provincial estates, while the walls bear paintings of hunting and biblical scenes. In the 19th century the building served as an administrative and court seat, later as a noble estate, a youth hostel and a retreat house. Since 1973 it has belonged to the municipality of Goldegg and, following the 1981 provincial exhibition, it has been a cultural and seminar centre.
The museum was founded in 1965 by the local historian Nora Watteck in the Zehentturm (tithe tower) of Pfarrwerfen and moved into the castle in 1975 as the Pongau Local History Museum. It shows furniture, household goods, clothing and work tools from rural life in the Pongau, as well as Perchten masks and early skiing equipment; the tour also includes the Knights’ Hall, historic living rooms and the wood-panelled Kemenate (ladies’ chamber). The museum is currently being redesigned, and its reopening is announced for spring 2027.
