Om museet
Schloss Hohenbrunn was built between 1722 and 1733 to plans by Jakob Prandtauer for the provost of St. Florian and is regarded as his only castle documented by records. The building translates the typical Upper Austrian Vierkanthof (four-sided farmstead) into Baroque forms. Although richly furnished, the hunting lodge was scarcely used and fell into decay over the centuries; after the Second World War it faced final ruin.
An association founded in 1961 saved the castle, acquired it from the abbey and set up a hunting museum in it, which opened in 1967. In 2000 the Upper Austrian hunters' association bought the property and had it comprehensively renovated. Today it also houses the Upper Austrian State Hunting Association with its training facility. The west wing was redesigned inside a few years ago.
On about 450 square metres, the museum shows nature, wildlife and hunting from several centuries. On view are large hunting paintings, historic weapons, trophies and the gun cabinet of Crown Prince Rudolf from Mayerling. Highlights are one of the largest European collections of hunting porcelain and a hunting cynology collection with dog collars from the period 1580 to 1804. A particularly significant Baroque painting is “The Bear Hunt” by Frans Snyders.
