Om museet
Schloss Lerchen on the edge of Radstadt's old town is first mentioned as a tower in 1289. Destroyed in the Peasants' War of 1525/26, the manor house was rebuilt from 1530 and subsequently changed hands several times. In 1779 the Salzburg Court Chamber acquired it and installed the seat of the chief forester there; the coat of arms of Archbishop Colloredo on the east façade recalls this period.
In the 19th and 20th centuries the building served, among other things, as a brewery warehouse, a care home and a municipal housing block; a plain extension from 1971/72 considerably changed its appearance.
Since 1985 the castle has housed the town's local history museum, which is run by the Radstadt Museum Association. Across several floors it covers the geological history of the region with minerals, a cave bear skull and the "Window into the Silurian", the history of the town from the Romans through the founding of the town, the Peasants' Wars and the Reformation to the present day, and former trades. Separate sections are devoted to the organist and composer Paul Hofhaimer, Radstadt ceramics around Leo Miller, the development of skiing, and rescue services and the fire brigade. As the association's second venue, the Kapuzinerturm shows exhibitions on the Peasants' War of 1526.
