Om museet

The complex in Loosdorf, today part of the municipality of Fallbach, is documented as a fortified stronghold in 1416 and changed hands several times over the following centuries. In 1645 Swedish troops destroyed the castle. From 1732 Prince Emanuel of Liechtenstein had the present castle built together with a church; at the end of the 18th century, under Johann I of Liechtenstein, it received a neoclassical garden façade, a state staircase and a landscape garden.

In 1834 Friedrich August Piatti acquired the estate and brought with him from Dresden the family's porcelain collection, built up since the 18th century, consisting mainly of Japanese and Chinese pieces for European noble houses. At the end of the war in 1945 most of the collection was wantonly smashed. The family kept the fragments and arranged them in the so-called Room of Shards as a memorial against war and violence. In 1959 a castle museum opened for the first time.

Since the mid-2010s selected pieces have been restored with Japanese experts and the University of Applied Arts Vienna; restored objects have already been shown in museums in Japan. Today the Piatti family presents the state rooms, the Room of Shards and the restored porcelain as the "Broken Collection" in the form of guided tours.
