Om museet

Count Ernst Rüdiger von Starhemberg acquired the estate in 1685 and from 1693 had Johann Bernhard Fischer von Erlach build a small hunting lodge. The building combines oval, rectangle and square into a compact complex whose centre is an oval hall.

In 1726 Prince Eugene of Savoy bought the property and used it as a complement to his neighbouring country estate, Schloss Hof. He had an extensive garden laid out, which, besides utility areas, included a pleasure grove with winding paths – a departure from the strictly symmetrical Baroque garden art. In 1755 Maria Theresa acquired both palaces. Nikolaus Pacassi remodelled Niederweiden, added a mansard roof and had rooms fitted with Chinese wallpaper; the oval hall received illusionistic wall paintings with exotic plants by Jean-Baptiste Pillement.

After 1765 the palace was hardly used any more and fell increasingly into disrepair: in the First World War the ground floor served as a horse stable, and in the Second World War it was badly damaged. A comprehensive restoration took place for the Lower Austrian Provincial Exhibition of 1986. From 2002 the house was leased out for events, and since 2015 the Schönbrunn Group has looked after it together with Schloss Hof as an exhibition venue; among other things, a Baroque game kitchen was on display.
