Om museet

First mentioned in 1261 as Burg Neuhaus, the complex in the Enns valley passed to the Archbishopric of Salzburg at the end of the 13th century. In the 16th century the Protestant Hoffmann family made it a centre of the Reformation. In 1664 Count Siegmund Friedrich von Trauttmansdorff bought the castle, had it rebuilt in the Baroque style and gave it the name Trautenfels; around 1670 the frescoes by Carpoforo Tencalla and the stucco work by Alessandro Sereni were created. From 1878, Count Josef Lamberg had the castle restored and furnished for living.

After 1945 the castle passed to the Republic, serving as refugee accommodation and a youth hostel. In 1951 the province of Styria decided to set up a department of the Joanneum for the Liezen district on the first floor; on 9 August 1959 the Heimatmuseum was opened, and in 1971 it was renamed Landschaftsmuseum. The first director, Karl Haiding, shaped the folklore collection; his Nazi past is now disclosed by the museum.

From 1983 an association saved the building from decay. It was fully renovated for the 1992 provincial exhibition, with the architect Manfred Wolff-Plottegg adding modern elements. In 1998 the new Landschaftsmuseum opened, linking the natural and cultural history of the Enns valley and the Ausseerland in thematic rooms arranged like a kaleidoscope. The collection comprises around 42,000 objects, mainly folklore, plus zoology, mineralogy, geology, archaeology and everyday culture after 1945.
