Om museet
Franz Schubert was born on 31 January 1797 in the small suburban house "Zum roten Krebs" in what was then Himmelpfortgrund, today Nußdorfer Straße 54 in the 9th district. The building is one of the few surviving townhouses of this suburb; besides the family's apartment, it also housed the school run by Schubert's father.
In May 1908, the Vienna City Council decided to acquire the house and turn it into a Schubert memorial. Since 1910, a fountain with the figure "The Trout" by Josef Müllner has adorned the courtyard, and the museum opened on 18 June 1912. Restorations followed in 1953, from 1966 (reopening in 1969) and from 1985 to 1987.
As a branch of the Wien Museum, the memorial presented on the first floor Schubert's life stages, his circle, his education and his work, including more than 600 songs, symphonies, choral, piano and chamber music, with documents, paintings and listening samples. The best-known object is one of Schubert's characteristic pairs of glasses. Since 2 March 2026, the house has been undergoing renovation with a focus on accessibility; it is due to reopen with a newly designed permanent exhibition for the 200th anniversary of the composer's death in 2028.
