Om museet
The Schüttkasten (granary) on Hamerlingstraße is already mentioned in the 11th century. It took on its present form as a four-story building with a saddle roof in the 16th century, and was comprehensively renovated in 1985. Since 1989 it has housed the Aussiedlermuseum (Resettlement Museum).
The museum commemorates the expulsion of almost 7,000 people from 42 villages of the Döllersheimer Ländchen, who had to leave their homeland from 1938 onward to make way for the military training area. The original exhibition on the upper floor could only be reached by a steep, narrow staircase and no longer met today's requirements.
As part of a cross-border Interreg project, the exhibition was therefore moved to the ground floor and completely redesigned by 2022; it has been step-free ever since. Seven stations cover life before the resettlement, the Anschluss (annexation) to the German Reich, the relocation along with replacement houses and compensation payments, individual fates, and the nature of the military training area as a Natura 2000 site. Interviews, sound recordings and films complement the exhibition; QR codes allow visitors to call up further photos, videos and texts on their smartphones.
