Om museet
Stoob in the Mittelburgenland has for centuries been regarded as a pottery village. A guild chest documents the village as a center of the potters’ trade (Hafner), and a source from 1851 records one master potter for every fourth house. The ware was packed in straw and carted by horse-drawn wagon to markets in the surrounding area and as far as Hungarian towns such as Kőszeg, Sopron and Szombathely. To this day the craft shapes the village; since the mid-20th century, Stoob has also been home to the only provincial vocational school for ceramics and stove building in Austria.
The Töpfermuseum opened in 1979 for the village’s 750th anniversary. It is housed in the former living quarters of a potter’s family, and a restored kiln stands in the garden. The exhibition explains how the craft emerged in Stoob, how the workshops operated and why, unlike in many other places, it has survived to the present day.
It presents the two traditional directions: the "glazed potters" (glasierte Hafner), who made cookware with green or brown lead glaze, and the "red potters" (rote Hafner), who made unglazed drinking vessels, including the Stoober Plutzer, a bulbous handled bottle that became the village’s emblem and kept water cool in the fields even in the heat. A second exhibition section spans about 8,000 years of ceramic history in the region, with selected pieces from all periods. Group tours led by a Stoob master potter also show how the ware is made on site.
