Om museet
The roots of the collection lie with private railway enthusiasts: when many trams were retired after the Second World War, individuals saved valuable vehicles from being scrapped. This led to the founding of the Verband der Eisenbahnfreunde in 1950 and the Verein Wiener Tramwaymuseum in 1966, which restored the vehicles and used them on special excursions.
In 1985 the Wiener Verkehrsbetriebe agreed with the private owners to set up a joint museum in the Erdberg depot, which had been the operating depot for lines D and 18 from 1901 to 1990. From May 1986 the first converted hall could be visited on weekends; after the depot was decommissioned, the Wiener Straßenbahnmuseum was expanded to several halls in 1992.
Following extensive renovation, Wiener Linien opened the newly designed Verkehrsmuseum Remise in September 2014. It tells the story of public transport as part of Vienna's urban development, from the horse-drawn tram to the subway. The associations' vehicles stand alongside those of Wiener Linien as permanent loans; together, the collection is regarded as one of the most complete on the local transport of a single city.
