Om museet

The museum in Moschendorf was founded in 1981 by the Kulturverein Moschendorf at the suggestion of the then mayor Stefan Behm. The aim was to preserve testimonies of anonymous rural building culture in southern Burgenland from decay. Historic log buildings from the surrounding area were collected and faithfully rebuilt on site.

Today the grounds hold 15 buildings from four centuries, furnished with furniture, agricultural implements and tools from their period. These include a Kreuzstadel (cross barn) of 1663 from Gaas with a smithy, a cooper's workshop and historic carts, several single-storey wine cellars with presses, distilling kettles and cellar equipment, and a dwelling house with a fully furnished cobbler's workshop. In the pressing room of a wine cellar from 1834 stands a beam press (Hengstpresse) from 1745. The site has been complemented by newly built structures such as an archive, a chapel, vinotheques and a large event hall.

The wine museum also sees itself as a cultural centre of the region. In the vinotheques, wines of southern Burgenland are tasted and sold, especially the traditional Uhudler. In addition, folk musicians' gatherings, exhibitions, barbecue evenings and festivals take place.
