Om museet
The Wiener Aktionismus Museum, WAM for short, opened on 15 March 2024 on Weihburggasse in Vienna's inner city. It is backed by a collectors' collective of six private individuals who acquired parts of the Friedrichshof collection and wanted to make it permanently accessible to the public. According to the initiators, it is the largest collection on Viennese Actionism in the world.
The holdings comprise around 17,000 objects from the period between 1957 and 1973: paintings, photographs, films, sketches and prints that document the actions of the central artists. They include Hermann Nitsch, Günter Brus, Otto Muehl and Rudolf Schwarzkogler. Only a small part of it is on view at any one time: on about 900 square metres over two floors, the museum shows changing exhibitions, one to two per year, and at the same time sees itself as a place for scholarly engagement with the movement.
The building was converted and extended for museum use. It is directed by Klaus Albrecht Schröder, the former director of the Albertina; Julia Moebus-Puck is responsible for the collection. Guided tours, lectures and talks accompany the exhibitions.
