Om museet
The large farmhouse on Müntschemiergasse in Ins was built in 1803 by Anker's grandfather, the veterinarian Rudolf Anker. The painter Albert Anker was born here in 1831, set up a studio on the upper floor in 1859 and inherited the house in 1860; from 1891 he lived in Ins year-round with his family. After his death in 1910, the property remained in the family, and the studio with its complete furnishings was preserved almost unchanged.
In 1994, Matthias and Rosette Brefin, together with the Canton and Burgergemeinde of Bern and the municipality of Ins, founded the non-profit Albert Anker-Haus Ins Foundation, which now runs the Centre. In 2009 the house was added to the inventory of cultural property of national significance, and in 2016 the property passed to the foundation. For the expansion of the artist's house, the Biel architect Marcel Hegg designed the art pavilion in the garden (in operation since June 2022), and the residence was renovated in keeping with its heritage status from 2022 to 2024; the former agricultural section now serves as reception, exhibition and workshop space.
The Centre Albert Anker has been open to visitors since June 2024. The bilingual permanent exhibition tells the story of the artist's life and commitments in thematic chapters; the residence and studio are accessible only on a guided tour. The foundation's collection includes the studio with Anker's belongings and a library of over 1,000 books, as well as around 900 sketches, designs, drawings, watercolours and oil studies.
