Om museet
Emma Kunz (1892–1963) was known as a naturopath but described herself as a researcher. From 1938 she created large-format, strictly geometric drawings on graph paper in which she recorded her insights. In 1942, by her own account, she came across a healing stone, which she named AION A. She returned again and again to the grotto in a former Roman quarry near Würenlos in order, as she put it, to “recharge”.
Her body of work of around 600 sheets was first shown publicly in 1973, when the then director of the Aargauer Kunsthaus, Heiny Widmer, exhibited it. Exhibitions followed later in Düsseldorf, Paris, New York and many other cities; according to the foundation, the drawings have been shown in more than 50 museums.
The Emma Kunz Zentrum was founded in 1986 on the initiative of Anton C. Meier at the site where AION A was found, in order to preserve Emma Kunz’s legacy. The museum was inaugurated on 17 October 1991 and has since permanently displayed around 40 of her works in calm, bright rooms. A visit also includes the grotto, which can be entered for half an hour by prior appointment; from the end of November to mid-February it is lit by lanterns. The museum is run by the Emma Kunz Foundation, which also handles loan requests for her work.
