Om museet

The Figurentheater-Museum Herisau opened in 2020 in an old Appenzell house in the middle of the village centre. On three floors and in eight rooms, a personal, manageable exhibition has taken shape in which marionettes, hand puppets, shadow figures and other figures can be viewed up close. It is run by the Verein Figurentheater-Museum; funding is based purely on private means, including contributions from several foundations in Herisau and the region.

The museum's own collection comprises more than 500 puppets from over 20 countries. In addition there is a collection, still being built up, of figures from Swiss puppet, figure and object theatre, mainly from recent decades. It tells how Switzerland experienced a golden age of this branch of theatre over the past 50 years or so; stages from the region are also represented.

Each season the museum portrays one Swiss company in an annual exhibition and complements it with a thematic show featuring international contributions. Puppets and objects from a permanent exhibition remain on display for two to three years at a time. An adventure trail leads children through the house, appeals to their senses and lets them play themselves at the end. In the same building there is a puppet theatre with its own programme as well as a specialist library with an archive.

With every tenth admission, one child's ticket is free. Members of the association have free museum admission. Vouchers for performances and museum visits are available.

On days without performances, the foyer and theatre room can be hired for events, talks, meetings or courses (ten tables for four with chairs); basic rental CHF 100 per evening or half day.
