Om museet
The building in Rapperswil-Jona was originally constructed as an arsenal for weapons and ammunition in the style of a granary, based on plans by Hans Kindlimann and executed by master builder Friedrich Straub. Initial extensions followed as early as 1905. The patented small bunker in the forecourt, designed by Gottfried Schindler, still recalls its military use.
The foundation of the museum is the collection of Elisabeth and Peter Bosshard, who, over 47 years starting in 1971, tracked down young positions in the Swiss art scene and followed established artists. In 2006 they contributed the entire collection to the Stiftung Kunst(Zeug)Haus. In 2008 the roughly 2,600-square-meter building was converted into a museum according to plans by the Zurich architects Isa Stürm and Urs Wolf, with a light-filled exhibition hall under a curved roof on the upper floor.
Today the collection comprises around 7,000 works by about 800 Swiss artists since 1950. Around seven exhibitions are shown each year. On the first floor, a thematic collection exhibition complements the program, and the platform "Seitenwagen" often gives artists under 30 their first museum exhibition. A special feature is the Robinson Library with around 4,000 Robinsonades (Robinson Crusoe-style tales).
