Om museet

The museum originated in a citizens' initiative: the Association du Vieux-Lausanne, founded in 1902, wanted to keep alive the memory of the earlier city in the face of the rapid destruction of old buildings. On 27 December 1918, the Musée du Vieux-Lausanne opened in the former episcopal residence next to the cathedral. The medieval building, the Ancien-Évêché, is a cultural property of national significance.

Over the decades the museum changed its name several times, most recently from Musée historique de Lausanne to Musée Historique Lausanne. Its ambitions grew along with the name: the museum no longer tells only the story of the old town, but of the whole city and its inhabitants up to the present day. Following a comprehensive renovation of the building and the exhibition, it has presented itself in a new form since April 2018.

The permanent exhibition "Lausanne, l'Exposition" leads through eleven thematic rooms dealing with, among other things, building and housing, water and transport, trade and crafts, faith, the Enlightenment and the rise of Lausanne as a tourist city. It begins with the famous 1:200-scale model of the Cité, based on David Buttet's 1638 plan, which has been on display in the building since 1990. In the warm season, a buvette in the garden invites visitors to take a break.
