Om museet

When Adrian Conan Doyle, son of the writer Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, settled at the Château de Lucens in 1965, he founded a museum there in memory of his father’s work. Since June 2001 it has been housed in the “Maison Rouge” (Red House) in the centre of Lucens.

On display are books and objects relating to Sherlock Holmes, the detective character invented by the author, as well as furniture and personal belongings of Conan Doyle. The centrepiece is the sitting room of Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson: an exact replica of the Baker Street flat, built after the 1951 Festival of Britain based on the meticulous descriptions in the stories.

The sitting room contains hundreds of authentic, sometimes curious objects, including items that belonged to Conan Doyle himself and are said to have inspired the stories. The museum is run by a non-profit association commemorating Conan Doyle’s work and is looked after by the municipality of Lucens; a small museum shop completes the visit.
