Om museet
The Museo regionale delle Centovalli e del Pedemonte was founded in 1969 and opened to the public in 1989. It was intended to create a centre of remembrance for the valleys and to preserve and convey the region's historical, cultural and artistic heritage. Today the museum sees itself not only as a repository but also aims to strengthen the local population's awareness of the particularities of their area and to contribute to regional development.
Its seat is the Casa Maggetti in Intragna, a typical village at the entrance to the Centovalli. The main building dates from 1608, and the north wing was added in 1751. The labyrinthine architecture with corridors, stairs and landings shapes the tour, which presents objects and works of art in around twenty rooms that tell of the life and customs of past times.
The museum is run by a foundation in which the municipalities of Centovalli and Terre di Pedemonte, Pro Centovalli, the regional development office and the Lago Maggiore and Valleys tourism association are represented. It belongs to the Ticino network of ethnographic museums and also sells admission to the neighbouring campanile of Intragna, the tallest bell tower in the canton.
