Om museet
In the remote hamlet of S-charl at 1,810 metres above sea level, mining was carried out from the 12th to the 17th century and again from 1811 to 1829. At Mot Madlain the miners sought galena, which contained small proportions of silver; mining is first documented in 1317. The ore was carried by hand down 350 metres in altitude to the valley and smelted in the facilities of S-charl. Pack-animal drivers transported silver and lead ingots over the pass and the Münstertal as far as Merano and Bolzano. A tunnel network of 10 to 20 kilometres is assumed.
In 1987 the foundation "Fundaziun Schmelzra S-charl" was established to research the history of the mine, secure the ruins of the smelting works and make the facilities and tunnels accessible to the public. From the remains of the administration building of the second mining period (1811–1829), the museum was created from 1989 onwards with apprentice camps of various craft associations, and it was inaugurated in 1997.
Besides the mining exhibition, the house presents a bear exhibition: on 1 September 1904 the last brown bear in Switzerland was shot in the S-charl valley, in the area of today's Swiss National Park. The association Miniers da S-charl, founded in 1998, complements the offering with an annual programme and tunnel excursions.
