Om museet
The museum commemorates Anna Göldi, a domestic servant who was executed by the sword in Glarus in 1782 as a "witch". The trial is regarded as particularly well documented because extensive court records have survived. The initiator and sponsor of the museum is the Anna Göldi Foundation, established in 2007, which was brought to life by the lawyer Walter Hauser and aims to commemorate and research the case and to campaign for human and fundamental rights.
Since its opening in 2017, the museum has been housed in the so-called Hänggiturm in the Ennenda district. This 19th-century industrial building served as a drying tower for dyed and printed textiles and, despite its name, is a large, almost sacred-looking hall. In the permanent exhibition, themed islands lead from Anna Göldi's life story through witch-hunt mania, networks of power and the Enlightenment to journalism, culture of remembrance and rehabilitation.
The building also has an auditorium in the attic, a screen-printing workshop with samples from Glarus textile history, and an educational programme for school classes on belief in witches, justice and human rights.
