Om museet

The beginning was an encounter at a brocante (flea market): the founder Judith U. Hunger wanted nothing to do with dolls as a child, until an old porcelain-head doll caught her eye. From this enthusiasm a collection grew over decades, out of which the Puppen- und Spielzeugmuseum Solothurn emerged in 1998. It is still run privately today.

At first the museum was housed at Klosterplatz 4 on the Ritterquai. After the building was sold, it moved to a building in the old town, which is now reached via Stalden 11 and a main entrance on Westringstrasse.

On show are dolls, toy shops, dollhouses, pharmacies, kitchens and plush animals, together with numerous original accessories from the years 1870 to 1950, most of them from the period before 1930. The objects are not arranged chronologically but set out in carefully staged play scenes. A focus is the one-of-a-kind works of the Bernese doll artist Sasha Morgenthaler (1893–1975): the museum owns more than 70 of her dolls, which by its own account is probably the largest publicly accessible private collection of her work.
