Om museet
Heidegg is first mentioned in 1185 with Heinrich von Heidegg; the oldest surviving part of the castle dates from around 1192. In the 13th century the complex was greatly expanded under the lords of Heidegg. In 1386 it was the only one of the neighboring Seetal castles spared by the Swiss Confederates, which later inspired a well-known Swiss legend. Several owning families followed, until the city of Lucerne acquired the lordship in 1700 and completed the castle building; in 1798 Heidegg became a state domain, first of the canton of Baden, and from 1803 of the canton of Lucerne.
In 1875 the American Caroline Slidell bought the castle together with the Lucerne resident Ludwig Pfyffer von Heidegg. The last members of the Pfyffer von Heidegg family assembled the collection that now forms the core of the museum, and in 1950 they gave the castle to the canton of Lucerne. The support association Vereinigung Pro Heidegg was founded at that time; soon after, the rose garden, new winegrowing and the Swiss Hunting Museum were established.
After the complete renovation of 1995–1998, the park, playground and rest areas were renewed. In 2013, tree-ring analyses established Heidegg as the oldest precisely datable residential building in the canton of Lucerne. Most recently, the tower cellar with its radio play (2017), the living quarters of the Pfyffer family as “Heidegg Home Story” (2023) and the castle garden (2024) were newly staged.
