Om museet

The museum grew out of the collecting passion of the painter, sculptor and marionette maker Jean Bindschedler. After a travelling exhibition of his figures (1983 to 1985), he founded the Musée suisse de la marionnette in 1985 together with Marie-José Aeby in the Auquartier of Fribourg on the Saane. The two puppeteers had gathered the core of the collection on their travels; since then it has grown through numerous donations.

In 1989 the Fondation Bindschedler was established to promote the art of puppetry, and it supports the museum and the Théâtre des Marionnettes de Fribourg. In 1997 the foundation, with the support of the Federal Office of Culture, acquired the present building on Derrière-les-Jardins; from 1999 it was restored and fitted out. Between 2001 and 2008 the museum, theatre and a café came together under one roof, and the façade and roof were also renewed in keeping with the character of the house from around 1900.

The collection comprises shadow figures and puppets of different performing techniques from China, India, Indonesia, Africa, South America, various European countries and Switzerland, including works by Jakob Flach, Else Hausin, Erich Weiss and Jean Bindschedler himself. In addition there are toy theatres, stage sets and masks. On the first floor there is a library on figure theatre and a small children's theatre for playing with.
