Om museet
The Skulpturhalle Basel is a collection of plaster casts of Greek and Roman sculptures. It was originally run as a teaching collection of the university; in 1961 it was placed under the newly founded Antikenmuseum Basel. Today it is its second site, a "daughter museum" near the University Library at Mittlere Strasse 17, supported by the Canton of Basel-Stadt.
The collection comprises over 2,200 copies of statues and reliefs from museums around the world, from the Archaic period to late Roman times. It is world-famous for bringing together the complete architectural sculpture of the Parthenon in Athens. The casts come from statues and reliefs in museums in many different countries and make the development of ancient sculpture over many centuries visible side by side.
The Antikenmuseum Basel und Sammlung Ludwig at St. Alban-Graben complements the casts with originals from Egypt, the Near East, Greece and Italy. Because the exhibits of the Skulpturhalle are movable, the hall can also be rearranged for occasions such as concerts, readings or receptions "among the sculptures". Admission is free; the hall is open only two days a week and remains closed during the Basel summer school holidays.
