Om museet
The Tram-Museum Zürich goes back to an association founded in 1967 by a few enthusiasts of the "Züri-Tram" in the unheated rear shed of the Burgwies. In around 70,000 hours of volunteer work, the members have restored 15 historically valuable rail vehicles to date and assembled the most important collection on the history of local public transport in Switzerland. The association set up a first museum in the small Wartau depot in Höngg, which opened in 1989.
Since the space there was not sufficient, the present museum in the Burgwies depot was inaugurated in May 2007. The hall, built in 1893, is the oldest surviving tram depot in the city of Zurich, was used by the transport company until 1997 and is still operational today. On over 1,600 square metres of exhibition space the museum tells the story of urban development, industrialisation and urban mobility. Since December 2007 the museum has been run by the Tram-Museum Zürich Foundation; it is supported jointly with the association and the supporters' association in close cooperation with the Zurich city transport company.
The permanent exhibition shows original vehicles from 1897 to the present, historical uniforms, ticket machines, photographs and documents; most of the vehicles can be boarded. There is also a glass-floor tram, a model tram layout and the children's tram "Cobralino", which is driven by muscle power. The association also operates the historic tram museum line 21 and the bus museum line Ue.
