Om museet
The house in Moguer where Juan Ramón Jiménez spent his childhood and youth, the same one immortalised in “Platero y yo”, is today a museum devoted to the poet and his wife, Zenobia Camprubí. Its origins go back to 1948, when a group of residents decided to pay tribute to the writer, then in exile, with a public library bearing his name. In 1955 it was agreed to install a museum on the upper floor of the house where he had lived, and the large number of visitors made a complete project necessary, one that would bring the museum and the library together in the same building.
The Diputación Provincial de Huelva bought the property, and the couple contributed to its furnishing with several shipments and with almost all the material kept in the Museo Romántico in Madrid, from the flat they had to leave when they went into exile in 1936. Juan Ramón explicitly asked that his wife's name come first in the museum's name and, after receiving the Nobel Prize, sent half of the money to his museum in Moguer. The house museum officially opened its doors on 14 November 1958.
In 1987 the foundation project was born, formed by the Diputación de Huelva, the Moguer town council and the Department of Culture of the Junta de Andalucía. Since 2015 the institution has operated as a consortium, which the University of Huelva has joined. It now runs the museum, preserves the legacy of Juan Ramón and promotes activities to disseminate the life and work of the Jiménez-Camprubí couple.
