Om museet
The Casa Museu Verdaguer is the childhood home of the poet Jacint Verdaguer, who laid the foundations of the literary language of modern Catalonia. It is a house built around the 17th century and remodelled by its successive occupants, showing how a rural farming family lived at the time of the poet.
The first attempt to create a museum took place in 1936, promoted by a local group of the Federació de Joves Cristians de Catalunya led by Mossèn Joan Masoliver; the Civil War prevented the opening planned for 25 July. In the 1960s the association Amics de Verdaguer organised a popular subscription with which the house at number 7 of Major Street was bought. It was registered in the name of the town council and turned into a museum with furniture donated by local residents. In the 1980s a municipal autonomous body, the Patronat Casa Museu Verdaguer, was created, a new museography was designed and the museum began to open at fixed hours.
In 2005 the house became the seat of Espais Escrits. Xarxa del Patrimoni Literari Català, and since then it has been entered in the Register of Museums of the Generalitat de Catalunya (2009) and the Xarxa de Museus d'Història de Catalunya (2016); it has belonged to the Diputació de Barcelona's museum network since 2000.
On the ground floor the poet's life is explained in the space “La butaca de llegir”, with special attention to L'Atlàntida. On the first floor, the ethnographic collection shows the kitchen and household goods of a farming family and is devoted to La Pomerola. On the second floor the exhibition “Dos creadors. Verdaguer. Perejaume” explains the creative process behind Canigó and the artistic actions of Perejaume. The collection includes two tables that belonged to the poet and works by several artists; the library, specialised in Verdaguer, holds around 800 records.
