The Galería de las Colecciones Reales is a Patrimonio Nacional museum on the edge of the escarpment above the Campo del Moro, next to the Royal Palace and the Almudena Cathedral. The building is the work of the architects Emilio Tuñón and Luis Moreno Mansilla (Mansilla + Tuñón Arquitectos). Construction began in December 2006 and was carried out in four phases until December 2015.

The building is a reinforced concrete structure clad in granite panels, leaning against a large retaining wall. It is almost entirely below ground level, follows the line of the Royal Palace and exceeds 40,000 m², of which some 8,000 m² are for public use. It has three large column-free exhibition halls, about 120 m long and 16 m wide, formed by a succession of concrete portals.

The museum opened to the public in June 2023. It brings together pieces accumulated by the Spanish kings over some five centuries: paintings, sculptures, decorative arts, furniture, musical instruments, armour and tapestries, as well as works from other Patrimonio Nacional sites that are rotated through the exhibition.

The route follows a chronological order, from the Late Middle Ages to the present, and is organised into rooms devoted to the Habsburgs and the Bourbons. Among the artists represented are Juan de Flandes, Velázquez, Caravaggio, Bernini and Goya.

Gratis entré: Monday to Thursday (non-holidays) 18:00–20:00 for citizens of the European Union, residents and workers of the EU and Ibero-American citizens, only for free visits and with ticket-office admission. Also free on 18 May and 12 October.

Rate for cultural groups €14 (reduced €7) and for educational groups €7 per person. Unemployed people, active teaching staff, official tourist guides and members of ICOM and ICOMOS also enter free.

Both entrances (plaza de la Armería and cuesta de la Vega) are wheelchair accessible, and the route is made with ramps and lifts with Braille and voice signage. The counters have induction loops and an adapted height; a loop compatible with the audio guide is available on request. Wheelchairs, electric scooters and walking-stick seats are lent free of charge. There are Braille tactile plans, sign-language videos (LSE) and easy-read texts via QR codes, as well as audio descriptions.

Family workshop-visit programme, storytelling, holiday camps and musical activities for families with babies. There are baby-changing facilities on all exhibition floors and rest areas on each floor.

Transport & parkering

Main access via plaza de la Armería, next to the viewpoint; the entrance from cuesta de la Vega is used for guided group visits and temporary exhibitions.
