Om museet
Baza's municipal museum has its origins in archaeology. As early as 1945 there were plans to create a museum for the finds from Cerro Cepero, the site where the ancient Basti once stood. After several attempts that came to nothing, the town council bought a batch of pieces from a local collector in 1983, and in 1988 the Diputación de Granada lent the grave goods of three tombs from Cerro del Santuario on long-term deposit. That same year the museum opened in the newly restored rooms of the former town hall, with a replica of the Lady of Baza among its founding pieces.
The museum occupies two adjoining historic buildings from the 16th century in the old town, next to the Plaza Mayor. The Ayuntamiento Viejo (Old Town Hall) is the only surviving Renaissance town hall in the province of Granada; construction began in 1530 and it was given over entirely to the museum in 1998. The Alhóndiga, which served first as a public grain store and later as an inn, is organised around a central arcaded courtyard. It houses the new galleries, restored in 2011, as well as an auditorium, research rooms and spaces for temporary exhibitions. The Municipal Tourist Office is in the entrance hall.
The permanent exhibition covers the Prehistory, Iberian I and II, Roman, Visigothic, Medieval and Early Modern galleries. Highlights include the Bastetan necropolises and funerary sculpture, such as the Warrior of Baza. The original Lady of Baza is displayed in the Museo Arqueológico Nacional.
