Om museet
The museum occupies the Castle of San Antón, a 16th-century fortress built to defend the city on the islet known as Illa da Pena Grande, opposite the Paseo del Parrote. Between the 16th and 18th centuries it served as a defensive building and a prison, and later as a lazaretto (quarantine station) to isolate sick sailors arriving in the city. Until the 1940s it was connected to the land by the Casa de Botes, now the museum's library. It has been declared a historic-artistic monument since 1949.
In 1960 the Ministry of the Army transferred the building to the City Council of A Coruña, which created the city's Archaeological and Historical Museum there, opened to the public in 1968. The exhibition is organised in three sections: medieval art and heraldry, archaeology, and the history of the building and of the city.
Among the pieces are proto-historic goldwork and objects from the megalithic period, the Bronze Age, the Castro culture and Romanisation. The route also includes the cistern carved into the rock, a replica of an Iron Age boat, the reconstruction of a megalithic cist, petroglyphs moved from near the Tower of Hercules, a ceramic mural from Sargadelos and, in the Governor's House, rooms devoted to the city's recent past, such as the Salón Barroco (Baroque Hall) and the Sala de las Navegaciones (Navigations Room).
