Om museet

The Museo Cerralbo occupies the palace that Enrique de Aguilera y Gamboa, 17th Marquis of Cerralbo, had built in the Argüelles district of Madrid. Work began in 1883 with the architects Alejandro Sureda, Luis Cabello Asó and Luis Cabello Lapiedra, and the family inaugurated the house in 1893. The marquis was a politician, historian, collector and pioneer of Spanish archaeology, and he designed the house both to live in and to house the collections he had assembled over the years at auctions, from antique dealers and on his travels.

On his death in 1922 the marquis bequeathed to the State his collections, part of the building and the income needed to maintain a future museum. The State accepted the bequest in 1924, and in 1927 that of his stepdaughter Amelia del Valle, the palace's last occupant, was added. Juan Cabré Aguiló, appointed by the marquis himself in his will, was the first director (1922–1939); he took charge of the general inventory of the collections, adapted the building to its new use and protected it during the Civil War.

The museum preserves much of the original atmosphere of an aristocratic residence from the turn of the century, spread over some thirty rooms. It houses painting, sculpture, furniture, lamps, mirrors, porcelain, arms, textiles, archaeological and anthropological pieces, a coin collection, a library and a historical archive, with a predominance of European works from the 17th to the 19th centuries. It is a State-owned and State-run museum under the Ministry of Culture, and it has a support foundation.
