Om museet
The museum occupies a new building in the historic centre of Alicante, opposite the basilica of Santa María, which incorporates the Casa de La Asegurada. This building, dating from 1685, is the oldest surviving civil construction in the city: it was built as a wheat granary (pósito de trigo) and is an outstanding example of Valencian Baroque. Over time it served as the seat of the municipal council, an artillery depot and prison, a secondary school and a school of commerce.
After years out of use, it was rehabilitated between 1966 and 1976 to house the Municipal Archive, and the Alicante-born artist Eusebio Sempere then considered it the best place to exhibit the 20th-century art collection he had donated to the city. The Museo de La Asegurada opened on 5 November 1977 and was one of the first contemporary art museums in Spain.
More than thirty years later, the Casa de La Asegurada became part of the current MACA, a building designed by the studio Sancho-Madridejos, with 4,680 m² across four floors above ground and two basements, financed by the Generalitat Valenciana. The museum belongs to Alicante city council and is managed by its Culture Department (Concejalía de Cultura).
Today it has one room for temporary exhibitions and four rooms for the permanent collections: Arte Siglo XX, Eusebio Sempere, Fundación Mediterráneo, Michael Jenkins–Javier Romero and Juana Francés, as well as a library, educational spaces and an assembly hall.
