Om museet
The Museo de Ávila arose from the Commission of Monuments of the province, responsible for protecting its historic and artistic heritage, and opened in 1911 in the building of the Biblioteca y Museo Teresianos (Teresian Library and Museum). For decades its holdings moved between different premises, including the Alcázar, the Arco de San Vicente, the cathedral cloister and the chapel of Las Nieves, and there were periods when they remained packed up. In 1968 it acquired its own identity as the Provincial Museum, with its own pieces, building, budget and staff, and it reopened in 1971. It was remodelled in 1986; from 1987 it has been run by the Junta de Castilla y León, and in 1998 it opened its Almacén Visitable (Visitable Store) in the church of Santo Tomé el Viejo.
The main seat is the Casa de los Deanes, a 16th-century Renaissance palace where the deans of the cathedral lived. It has a square plan around a central courtyard, a two-storey façade with columns attached to the wall in the manner of an Italian gallery, and brick arches on granite columns in the courtyard; the coat of arms of the cathedral chapter appears in both places. The Visitable Store occupies the former Romanesque church of Santo Tomé, built in the 12th century, which in the 20th century served as a garage before the State recovered it in 1964.
The collection brings together the material culture of the province from donations, contributions from other institutions and archaeological finds. Notable are the Fondo Antiguo of the Commission of Monuments, the collections of Federico García and Fulgencio Serrano, the pieces gathered by Arsenio Gutiérrez Palacios and Antonio Molinero, and the lot of the Marquis of Benavites, acquired by the Provincial Council as the founding basis of the museum. The museum is state-owned and regionally managed.
