Om museet

The museum occupies a building in Calahorra's old town known as “Casa del Millonario”, built in the 1930s with money from a national lottery prize. The Government of La Rioja acquired it and in 1982 handed its use over to the town council, which set up the Museo Municipal there to mark the city's bimillennium; the opening display dates from 1984 and was renovated in 1994.

In 2009 the museum became a section of the Museo de La Rioja under the name Museo de la Romanización, as part of the Museums Plan of the Government of La Rioja. Its collection expanded the municipal holdings, including the Roman sculptures found in the city, such as the famous “Dama de Calahorra”, with materials from excavations across La Rioja.

The route runs from the indigenous and Celtiberian peoples who received the Roman troops, through the conquest and full Romanization, to the Christianity of the martyr saints Emeterio and Celedonio. It is arranged over three floors and covers the period from the 5th century BC to the 4th century AD, with sections on domestic life in the domus, economic activities, and worship and games.
