Om museet
The museum’s origins lie in the Natural History Cabinet of the Universitat de València, founded in the mid-19th century. The cabinet occupied the main floor of the south wing of the university’s historic building, today the Centro Cultural La Nave, and was considered the second scientific and heritage centre of its kind in the country, after the Museo Nacional de Ciencias Naturales in Madrid.
On 12 May 1932 a fire destroyed much of the collections. Some zoological and botanical specimens were saved, but almost all the geological and palaeontological material was lost. The stuffed animals that survived are now displayed in the zoology room of the current museum. In 1996 the university’s Museu de Geologia was officially recognised, and it became the official depository for movable assets in geology, palaeontology and other natural sciences.
The university decided to bring its scattered collections together in a single space. Under an agreement of the Governing Council of December 2016 and a regional resolution of April 2017, the Museu de Geologia became the present Museu de la Universitat de València d’Història Natural. Its holdings include palaeontology (with a Triassic collection), zoology, geology, the Juan López Aliaga mineral collection, botany, scientific instruments and a sound library of nature recordings.
