Om museet

The Museo de Zaragoza was born after the ecclesiastical disentailment of 1835–1836, when works from suppressed convents were gathered together, and it first opened to the public in 1848. It passed through several seats (the church of San Pedro Nolasco, the former convent of Santa Fe and the Colegio Militar Preparatorio) before settling in 1910 in the building on the Plaza de los Sitios.

This building, by the architects Ricardo Magdalena and Julio Bravo, was erected for the Hispano-French Exhibition of 1908, which commemorated the centenary of the Sieges of the city. It is a brick building with wooden eaves and four towers at the corners, considered a historic-artistic monument since 1962. In 1914 it was renamed the Museo Provincial de Bellas Artes and, between 1977 and 1978, it adopted its current name.

Ownership is State-owned, but management has been in the hands of the Government of Aragon since 1987. To the core of Antiquities and Fine Arts were added the Ethnology section (1976), the Ceramics section and, in 1997, the museum facility at the Colonia Celsa, in Velilla de Ebro. The main seat on the Plaza de los Sitios has remained closed for works since 2 November 2023.
