Om museet

The collections of the Museo del Traje originated with the Exhibition of Regional and Historical Costume, opened in Madrid on 18 April 1925. From the opening speech onwards it was proposed to turn that temporary show into a permanent museum. After several moves, in 1934 its holdings passed to the Museo del Pueblo Español, which also gathered household objects and work tools, and which opened to the public only briefly between 1971 and 1973.

In 1993 the Museo del Pueblo Español and the Museo Nacional de Etnología were merged into the Museo Nacional de Antropología. To give the costume collections greater public presence, the Museo del Traje. Centro de Investigación del Patrimonio Etnológico (CIPE) was created in 2004, housed in the University City building that had been the seat of the Museo Español de Arte Contemporáneo. In 2020 it closed for improvement works and reopened in October 2021 with a renewed permanent exhibition.

The permanent exhibition traces the history of costume and fashion in Spain over the last three centuries, with a room devoted to traditional dress. The garments are shown in display cases with reduced lighting to protect them, and in 2025 more than 350 pieces were renewed, so that 28 of the 54 display cases received new content. The museum also has a library, workshops, an educational and multisensory area, a garden, a shop and a café.
