Om museet
The Museo do Ferrocarril de Galicia (MUFERGA) opened in 2001 in the former Renfe railway workshops, near Monforte de Lemos station. The museum itself occupies the former traction and repair workshop for Galicia's steam locomotives, where part of the historic material conserved and restored by the museum is now kept.
About 600 metres away, at the back of the site and linked to the museum by an internal track, is the roundhouse, the former locomotive depot of Monforte. It is a horseshoe-shaped building with thirty-eight radial tracks and a turntable bridge that allowed locomotives to change direction. The European Union has declared it a notable building of European industrial heritage, and it is the largest restored and operational roundhouse of its kind in Spain.
The collection brings together locomotives, wagons, vans and carriages of Spanish gauge, restored both aesthetically and operationally, as well as objects such as old centralised traffic control equipment, lamps, signals, tools, furniture and telephones. The pieces include the Mikado 141F 2111 steam locomotive, the electric locomotive 7722 “La Inglesa” and the King's carriage.
