Om museet
The Museo Nacional de Artes Decorativas was created in 1912 under the name Museo Nacional de Artes Industriales. A group of intellectuals and activists wanted to promote Spanish industrial arts and craftsmanship, and conceived the museum as a place of learning, modelled on the South Kensington Museum in London. Its first home was a flat on calle Sacramento, in the Madrid of the Habsburgs, where a director, a curator, a restorer and a librarian worked, and where workshops, courses, lectures and travelling exhibitions were organised.
Between the late 1920s and the early 1930s the institution was renamed Museo Nacional de Artes Decorativas. Due to a lack of space, the museum moved in 1934 to number 12 of calle de Montalbán, a mansion built in 1878 by the architect José María Gómez for the Duchess of Santoña, which had housed the Escuela Superior de Magisterio. The State bought the building from the heirs in 1941 and, through successive extensions, quadrupled its capacity. Part of the original brick and granite façade, the Italian mosaic floors and the white marble imperial staircase survive from the original construction.
Today the museum displays on the second, third and fourth floors a permanent collection focused on everyday life: a 17th-century manor house, the transformation of the decorative arts in the Bourbon period, and an 18th-century Valencian kitchen with tiles. The ground and first floors are devoted to free temporary exhibitions, with attention to contemporary design.
