Om museet

The museum occupies a military building in Dalt Vila designed by the engineer Simón Poulet, whose plans he signed in 1727. It makes use of the former half-buried casemate of the Sant Joan bastion, built at the end of the 16th century by Jacopo Paleazzo, “el Fratín”. The ground floor was used as a powder magazine and later as stables, and the upper floor as an armoury. The building, very sober and rationalist in its use of resources, now houses the permanent collection and the temporary exhibitions.

The museum emerged in the 1960s, linked to the artistic activity of the island and to the Bienal de Ibiza. Between 2007 and 2012 it was closed for a complete renovation: the architect Víctor Beltrán Roca designed an annex that grows downwards into the fill of the bastion, so as not to overwhelm the urban landscape and to take advantage of zenithal natural light. During the works, archaeological remains from the 7th century BC were found, and a space was set aside to display them. The museum reopened on 27 April 2012.

The collection consists mainly of contemporary art created on the islands in the 1960s, with works by the Grupo Ibiza 59, a holding of posters from the Carl van der Voort gallery, drawings and video. The museum is municipally owned by the Ayuntamiento de Eivissa and has a shop, a reading and consultation room and an assembly hall.
